Well....CRAP!

I finally got in touch with the principal of LHS this morning. I decided to try the seven-a.m., call-before-the-day-gets-started tactic and, lo and behold, he actually answered his phone!

He didn't have good news for me, though; they decided to go with the other candidate. He was very kind about it in what I felt was a genuine way - I didn't get the whole "it was a very deep pool" bullshit that I got from the principal of my internship school - LHS's principal explained that they were genuinely torn by their decision and that he would keep all of my contact information in case something unexpected opens up.

I'm disappointed, but less so because I more than half expected this to happen. CT assures me that something will come - "good teachers get jobs," she says. I'm not so sure - our market for English teachers is pretty saturated at the moment - but I'm going to keep letting the Universe know that I'm still here and still want to work.

Thank you all so much for waiting this out with me! It was easier knowing I have you all behind me!

I disagree with the thought that you're getting the runaround. I come from a profession where deadlines are moved a lot due to the human factor and if the people in charge were to call every candidate every time there was a change in schedule then no decision would ever be made. While it's possible the guy was ducking your call he may have been ducking it because he was waiting for a decision from the other person before he cut you loose.

Also I out and out resent the "deep pool" reason being called shit. Being a decidedly average person I've been high up in a lot of pools but often not high enough to get a job/place/payout. My ex-boyfriend was told that by an admissions person when he applied for a high-end college. She also told him to re-apply the following year. He did and he called her to remind her that he was in there. He got in. And he got in because he called her the first time to find out why he wasn't accepted, because he believed her when she called him talented and worthwhile and because he called her again to remind her of him. She had flagged his application and it was on her desk and he got his acceptance on the spot. So, yeah, I guess some people do use that as a way to let someone down easy but it's also frequently true and assuming it isn't doesn't do you any favors and, I know I'm reading into your innocent sentence, but it makes me feel like I must be an ass for ever thinking that I might actually have been qualified for something buit less qualified than someone else.

And yes, it's awful that this is the first comment of mine that reaches you while you're vacating. Hi! Hope it's sunny!

No, it's not awful - it's honest. I dig that.

I'm going to stand by my "deep pool" comment in this particular case because, well, it WAS bullshit. CT tells me that, of the three positions needed to be filled, two of them were offered to interns like myself - people with the same credentials and experience as I had. There is no reason whatsoever that I shouldn't have been offered one of those positions other than political stupidity. I'm still resentful about it - and don't EVEN get CT started.

I understand what you're saying, though. I know that competition can be fierce, that sometimes it's not credentials, but personality, that matter. Sometimes the pool really IS deep and the decision is difficult to make. I get that and I accept it. I really believe that, if a position opens up at LHS, I'll be the first person called to fill it. I also really believe that, if a position opens up at the internship school, I won't be.

The Universe has plans for me. I just have to practice enough patience to wait and see what those plans are.

You have a very good attitude about this. My experience in not getting hired, getting hired and hiring is that there isn't much use looking back. You learn what you need to quickly (a lot of what goes on is, frankly, absurd)and you go to the open door. Which is generally forward. Your persist, rely on your instincts, and don't take anything to heart.

What vanx said.

I like your attitude and I'm confident that you'll get a good post.

Unfortunately I can't comisserate further as I've never had a 'career' like you and my Evil Genius Husband - more a succession of jobs. I've never run up against a saturated job market where the smallest, stupidest thing, some random prejudice of an interviewer, might make or break your chances.

Best of luck to you, Mrs C!
